The Unlimited Power of Leaderless Communities

The Unlimited Power of Leaderless Communities

Conceiving Scalabl’s global community of graduates as a horizontal network - with no hierarchies or preassigned roles, where each person contributes with their own talents and knowledge and is nurtured by the network – goes hand in hand with my own purpose and it is for me a reason of immense satisfaction.

I have a passion for people and it is a gift to be involved in situations that allow me to go deep into the heart of human motivations, the reasoning that creates our judgements, the instinct that moves our behaviors. In the ever-present contest between our desires, fears, vulnerabilities and the systems of incentives that so often lead to behaviors rooted in our most primary mechanisms of attack or defense.

My work’s raw material is human life and our choices. The exploring of possible paths in the search for meaning, purpose and realization providing tools to make it possible; with the deep conviction that we can traverse these paths without needing to incur in any neglectful harm.

Given my conceiving of the economy – and all its various branches of studies – as a social science, my work’s raw material is human life and our choices. The fullness and controversy I feel within myself are directly proportional.

I work because I dream of a network that takes care of us, that draws out the best of us, through the right incentives; a network that each one of us can be an owner of, can contribute with and benefit from; where each one of us creates initiative, feels free and happy to add value and become a creator of opportunities for others; where everyone can see that the talent and potential available to achieve their desires is just one conversation away; in the diverse, in the unknown of the other.

I’ve been one with this project for the past four years. I keep, as a lesson, profound setbacks and frustrations reaped along the way, because I – just like anybody else – we are hurt, broken and with low resources to be able to vulnerably voice what we desire and what really hurts us; but each frustration brought us some learning, wisdom, understanding, the ability of not taking it personal, of not interpreting the someone else’s harm as something necessarily targeted at oneself.

That allows us to go back to moments of fullness; to reconnect with the force of purpose; to face all the obstacles and to continue to seek better ways of relating. What happens to one happens to all others as well, and to build a community is to create the incentives to diminish the probability of occurrence by opening spaces for overcoming behaviors.

The power of the individual is and will be growing, and the power of human connection and coordination through communities full of common purpose, passions and interests will energize the VUCA future – volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous – which is present today.

The decentralization of Scalabl’s community grows on the basis of its own learning experience; because it is a joint learning, through networking, under its prime organizing principle: not to negligently harm others.

Then, the endless array of opportunities which open themselves up in that interrelation of over 1000 totally diverse people from all over the world, manages itself through some of the many resources we teach and promote in our course - relating through listening and through our methodology which becomes everyday language.

To us, networking is the disposition of knowing who the other is, what they will do and what their desires are. It entails listening without judgement, listening without looking for an answer, above all, without looking to be right. It also entails listening to what they have to say to us, by lowering all our defense barriers. In the end, we are not prisoners of the word, we are free to interpret and to choose.

And in order to capitalize on the understanding which listening provides, we train ourselves in the agility and the wonder of seeing and feeling from someone else’s place; and to quickly identify, in front of each and every situation which convenes us, which things we find easy to give which can be of great value to someone else.

Sometimes, because of the great pleasure of giving first, but in many other occasions, because this is the cornerstone, along with continuous learning, upon which virtuous businesses are built.
